There are now three new names on the roll call of winning manufacturers in the UK Car of the Year Awards after the first round of voting in the 2023 competition. MG picked up its first ever award as its MG4 fought off its rivals in the Best Family segment. In the Best Large Family category, Dacia was victorious, with its Jogger. Finally, the ever-popular Best Performance prize was awarded to the Lotus Emira supercar.

Picking up two category wins for very different products was Toyota. The Japanese manufacturer’s Aygo X triumphed in the Best City category, while the prize for Best Performance went to the GR86. The two remaining awards were for crossovers – the fastest-growing area of the UK’s automotive sector. Kia’s Niro was recognised as top of the class within the Best Crossover category, while the Range Rover triumphed in the Large Crossover category.

This year’s judging panel, which comprises 27 motoring journalists based all over the UK, were asked to choose their winners in vehicle classes ranging from Best City Car to Best Crossover to Best Performance. The top model in each of the segments has now qualified for the next stage – the category of UK Car of the Year 2023, which will be announced on 10th March 2023.

The UK Car of the Year Awards is run in association with heycar, which has sponsored the awards since January 2022. Karen Hilton, CEO at heycar, commented: “It’s great to be sponsoring The UK Car of the Year Awards again this year. Last year we saw an amazing range of models launched into the market and it’s fantastic to see them being recognised here. Congratulations to all of the category winners, we can’t wait to find which of the seven models takes the top prize!”
